Modi government will make a unique identity card mandatory for all building and construction workers : New Delhi. The Central Government comes up with many schemes from time to time for the welfare of the poor, laborers and farmers so that they can get benefits. In this context, to ensure the protection of the rights of migrant workers, the Central Government will make a unique identity card mandatory for all building and construction workers across the country. This identity card will be linked to the worker’s Aadhaar and will also be linked in the e-Shram database. Giving this information on Wednesday, Labor Secretary Aarti Ahuja said that detailed information on these reforms can be released next week.
He made this comment while addressing ‘The Migration Conclave’ organized by All India Employers Organization (AII) and industry body FICCI in collaboration with International Labor Organization (ILO) here.
Concern for the interests of workers
Ahuja talked about ways to deal with the challenges arising from increasing cases of contractors employing unregistered laborers. He said that the four labor codes require contractors to provide comprehensive benefits to these workers as per the provisions of the Interstate Migrant Workers Act. These include minimum wages, occupational safety and access to basic facilities like toilets and crèches at workplace.
Ahuja said the ministry also plans to implement measures to ensure adequate shelter, sanitation and awareness of rights at these places. On this occasion, Satoshi Sasaki, Deputy Director of the International Labor Organization, underlined the importance of labor migration in the present and future labor market. He also talked about the opportunities and challenges faced by migrant workers.
