As the date of the election is approaching, the situation of a contest is going on between Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for the top post of the party.

According to sources, after Sonia Gandhi’s return from abroad, Tharoor and some other Congress leaders met her on Monday. After this, the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi indicated that she had no objection to Tharoor contesting for the post of Congress president. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said, “Whoever wants to contest elections is free and is welcome to do so.” Congress President Sonia Gandhi and senior leader Rahul Gandhi have also clarified their position in this regard. It is an open, democratic and transparent process. No one needs anyone’s permission to contest the election (Congress Presidential Election 2022).

Will there be an election between Gehlot and Tharoor?

Sources said the G-23 group is gearing up to field a candidate and Thiruvananthapuram MP Tharoor is its top choice. This group had demanded comprehensive reforms in the Congress. He is fighting for the top post of Shashi Tharoor party from this group. On the other hand, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is the preferred choice for the Gandhi family loyalists. However, Gehlot is reportedly reluctant to step down as chief minister and move to Delhi. If they are not ready for this, then the lottery of former Union Minister Mukul Wasnik or Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge can open. Both of them belong to the Scheduled Caste community.

Votes will be cast on October 17

Meanwhile, state units of Congress, which include Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, are passing resolutions to make Rahul Gandhi the next party president. However, Congress’s Central Election Authority (CEA) chairman Madhusudan Mistry has said that such proposals will not have any impact on the election process and the election will be held as per its schedule. He said that the notification for the election of the Congress President will be issued on September 22. At the same time, the nominations of the candidates will be filed between September 24 and September 30. After this, voting will be held on October 17.
