Neeraj Chopra Lausanne League: Neeraj Chopra created history in the Diamond League competition by securing the first position in his very first attempt.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne League: Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Friday created history once again as he became the first Indian to win the Lausanne stage title of the Diamond League Meet.

With this, he has also reached the final of the Diamond League in Zurich on September 7 and 8. He is the first Indian to achieve this feat. He has also qualified for the 2023 World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

Chopra (24) threw the javelin 89.04 meters away in the first attempt to clinch the title. This is the third best effort of his career. He could not participate in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham due to injury.

Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Jakub Wadlech is competing in Lausanne and the Czech athlete tops the table with 20 points. He is followed by Germany’s Julian Weber (19 points) and Grenada’s world champion Andersen Peters (16 points). Webber will not take part in Lausanne and Peters is also recovering from injury. Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago is also in the running.

Before Chopra, discus thrower Vikas Gowda is the only Indian to make it to the top three of the Diamond League meet. Gowda had finished second twice in 2012 New York and 2014 Doha, in addition to third twice (in 2015 in Shanghai and Eugene).

Chopra had decided to pull out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games just two days before the start of the Games as he was advised four weeks’ rest. Chopra had tweeted on Monday, “Feeling good and ready for Friday. Thanks everyone for the support. See you in Lausanne. ,
